Mansfield Music Faces Retrenchment: What We Know So Far
Updated: 2 days ago
Commonwealth University has announced a sweeping retrenchment plan that targets the heart of Mansfield's music, theatre, and dance programs. This is the first in a series of updates tracking what is happening and what we are doing about it.
What's at stake:
Elimination of specialist faculty in strings, woodwinds, percussion, and voice
Loss of NASM (National Association of Schools of Music) accreditation
Loss of PDE (Pennsylvania Department of Education) certification for music educators
Loss of NAST (National Association of Schools of Theatre) accreditation
Elimination of the dance minor — unique within Commonwealth University
Severe reduction of ensemble offerings: orchestra, wind ensemble, marching band, jazz band, and concert choir all impacted
Why this matters: Unlike large university music programs with broad, interchangeable faculty, Mansfield operates on a conservatory model — master-apprentice mentorship with artist-teachers who are specialists in their instruments. A trumpet professor cannot teach bassoon. A voice professor cannot teach strings. Eliminating these positions is not a reduction — it is an unraveling of the entire model.
What's happening next: The department has filed a formal response analyzing the full impact of the proposed cuts. The petition is now live. We will update this page as developments unfold.
